Global warming doubter, coal industry donate to Fiorina campaign

One of Carly Fiorina's ads attacks Barbara Boxer for being "worried about the weather."

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina has obtained about $63,000 in donations this year from Appalachian coal-mining interests, much of the money from an outspoken Ohio mine owner who dismisses global warming as “hysterical global goofiness.”

In a cluster of transactions – most of them dated Feb. 4 – 64 donors associated with mining in Ohio, West Virginia and other coal-producing states made contributions to Fiorina, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer.

Of that, nearly $25,000 came from employees and a political committee of Cleveland-based Murray Energy Corp., the nation’s largest privately-owned coal producer. Other donations in the bundle came from Midwestern companies that sell mining equipment and supplies. Fiorina attended a fundraiser with coal-mining interests in Ohio earlier this year.

Robert Murray, Murray Energy’s CEO, has clashed repeatedly with Ohio environmentalists, facing criticism for building mining tunnels beneath an old-growth forest and for pushing plans to expand a huge storage lake for water polluted with mining runoff, according to interviews and press reports.

As Congress this year debated climate change legislation, Murray emerged as an aggressive critic of proposals to restrict the burning of coal, styling those efforts as a national “economic suicide note.”

Murray’s press spokesman declined to comment. But Andrea Saul, spokeswoman for Fiorina, responded:

Carly thinks we need to have the courage to examine the science of climate change, but knows that us acting alone will only put our companies at a severe competitive disadvantage in the global marketplace with no impact on the issue. First and foremost, Carly believes we need to expand and diversify our nation's energy portfolio – solar, wind, coal, natural gas – to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil.

Murray has no known connection to Fiorina, the former Hewlett Packard CEO. But Murray has publicly butted heads with Boxer, who has boosted cap-and-trade legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

In testimony at a 2007 Senate hearing that Boxer attended, Murray dismissed global warming as “global goofiness” and accused congressional Democrats of “attempting to export the draconian so-called ‘global warming’ measures already enacted in California … to the rest of America.”

Boxer then questioned Murray about mining safety, asserting his company had paid the “biggest fines” of any mine operator in Ohio.

“You are wrong!” Murray retorted, according to a transcript, also saying, “You don’t have the foggiest idea what a person does to pack a lunch and go to work or wear a hard hat.”

Since then, Murray has singled out Boxer for criticism on global warming issues. Last year, when he laid off 91 miners at a mine in eastern Ohio, Murray sought to blame President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats, including Boxer, saying in a press release that the “insanity” of proposed cap-and-trade legislation to fight global warming was reducing the demand for coal.

Murray is “very outspoken in his opposition to climate change legislation,” said Nachy Kanfer, a Sierra Club coal expert based in Columbus, Ohio. “He’s so outspoken, he almost revels in it.”

With political donations, Kanfer said Murray was “targeting the champions of revitalizing our economy with clean energy – the Bob Murrays of the world rely on dirty energy to survive.”

As late as 2008, when she spoke at the Republican National Convention that nominated John McCain, Fiorina advocated cap-and-trade measures for environmental protection.

“John McCain will create a cap-and-trade system that will encourage the development of alternative energy sources,” she said, as grist.org has noted.

But since she began running for the Senate, Fiorina has backed away from the topic. In a TV interview during the GOP primary, Fiorina said “I’m not sure,” when asked whether climate change was occurring. And in a TV commercial, she mocked Boxer for asserting that climate change could pose national security issues for the U.S.

“Terrorism kills, and Barbara Boxer is worried about the weather,” Fiorina said.

Murray, the mine owner, uses tough language about  proposals to check climate change.

In testimony before the Senate environment and public works committee last year, Murray contended that replacing coal-fired power plants would “kill American people” and cause perhaps 150,000 “premature deaths annually.” That’s because alternative energy sources are much more expensive, he said.

In a 2009 essay for the West Virginia Gazette newspaper, Murray derided cap-and-trade legislation then pending before Congress as an “economic suicide note,” saying the measure would “destroy the nation’s coal industry,” cost taxpayers “over $2 trillion in just over eight years” and transfer wealth from the Midwest “to the West Coast and New England.”

Murray won national attention in 2007 when a cave-in at a Utah mine co-owned by one of his companies killed six miners. In television interviews, Murray defended his company’s safety record and contended the mine collapse was caused by an earthquake.

In Ohio, he battled in court for years for the right to mine beneath an Ohio forest containing some of the only old-growth hardwood trees left in the state. In the end, a federal court rejected an environmentalists’ lawsuit and allowed tunneling to commence near the forest, called Dysart Woods.

Ohio University owned the tract, but not the mineral rights. During the controversy, Murray was arrested on charges of assaulting environmentalists outside a hearing room, the Associated Press reported. Murray said the accusation was false and politically motivated, and he was eventually acquitted, the AP said.

While most Californians want more Renewables used for our electricity needs, Fiorina has joined up with a coal company owner (one under numerous investigations over the years)to promote coal. Just what we don't need- an Ohio coal company interfering in our US Senate race. Fiorina should be running for office in Kentucky or W. Virginia.

Bob, CURRENTLY The State of Calif has over 37 NEW green friendly power plants ready to be built in the state. The builing of each power plant would provide between 1000 and 2000 jobs PER PLANT-SO EVEN BEING "conservative" in numbers thats 37,000 new jobs to a state that has 10% unemployement. These are SOLAR and WIND plants for the most part! YET, the Eco-Nazis have them all tied up in court due to "enviormental impacts" and concerns. The City of Los Angeles gets 21% of all LA's power from COAL utiltiy plants in ARIOZONA! This is insane! You allow other states to build these-and then buy the power-spending more and drive up the cost to every consumer in CAL! When are the voters going to wake up in Calif?? The fact is-you need oil and you need coal becuase of the way our power grid is set up. The damn eco lobbies REFUSE to allow any new building of ANY NEW plants in Calif-the voters are getting screwed over by both sides. Boxer is in bed with the dam tree huggers. She is just like Ted Kennedy who blocked a wind power farm off the Coast of Mass becuase it interfeared with hit "boating" and "ocean views"- this is insane! The damn voters in CALIF have been brainwashed into thinking this way and this is why the state is in decline

Kinda like a Chicago polical machine and Chicago political hack backing Boxer and was doing big poltical fund raisers in San Francisco with Boxer as the oil well gushed crude oil in the gulf coast area?? The same "Chicago political machine" that TRIED TO influanced elections in Colorado and Penn until other democrats called our nations attention to the influance and breach of "ethics"! Oh I fogot-Oboma and company are in "control" andf they are ALSO DEMOCRATS so that make's all this "back room" stuff "OK" to be involved in California and others states Senate races! It becomes wrong when a Company backs a candidate-talk about DOUBLE STANDARDS! It's totally fine for Chicago-a corrupt state goverment that brought us "Blogo" to be involved in California elections but not a "company" which could bring jobs to a state with 10% unelmployment!
John IN TEXAS's picture
yea, keep it up in Calif, when Chavez cuts off our oil you folks will pay about 5.00 a gallon-WHEN Oboma AND THE 31ST CONGRESS LEAD BY NUTTY "NANCY" and their tax hikes all kick in your cost to commute anywhere will go up to 6.00 per gallon. Keep it up California!! I find it amusing that this story diverts attention away from the REAL ISSUES in Calif like "the budget mess", "jobs", and "immigration" this web site is a BIT MORE BALANCED ABOUT WHAT BOXER STANDS FOR! Granted Fiorian is an UNKNOWN in many areas-but I am all for HOPE AND CHANGE WHEN IT COMES TO CHANGING THE 31ST CONGRESS AND THROWING OUT ALL THE DEAD BEATS BOXER HAD HER CHANCE. Time for "change" and "new ideas" http://www.numbersusa.com/content/elections/races/congressional I may need to re-think this web site-seems to me just one more site who wants to preach the same old "progressive" junk and "feel good" political views. I know how I am gonna vote this fall out in Calif-yes, I can still vote in CA! It won't be for Boxer-enough is enough!

Murray Coal also gave $30,000 to Prop 23, the ballot measure primarily financed by two Texas oil companies to kill California's clean energy and clean air standards. The Beltway-based "Clean Coal" coalition also has donated to them. Prop 23 will kill hundreds of thousands of jobs in the fast-growing clean energy industry and undermine more than $10 billion of investment.
Bob Mulholland's picture
John- which of the two Texas oil companies behind Prop 23 are you working for? Or do you work for another oil or coal company? Or do you work for Fiorina? The last time Texas was involved in California's energy policies was with Enron who manipulated and shut down power plants to drive up the cost of our electricity. John- how's your Enron doing? Maybe you worked for them previously? California has had enough from Texas. In fact, Bush Jr and Enron were disasters for our state.

I retired from the City of LA at the ripe ol age of 48- I know about Calif mind sets!! I never "over extended myself" like many in Calif did-I stuck to "tried and true" business standards. While others/cities all crashed, I have flurished! Like 800,000 others from Cal, I got sick of being TAXED TO DEATH! SO I LEFT THE 'BANKRUPT STATE"- I went to Texas where the cost of living is much lower, and the quality if life in equal to any in California! This was a total BUSINESS choice to move 1,800 miles away-now I "boycott" California! I take my money and don't spend a dime of it in the state! I was born and raised in the Modesto area and moved to Los Angeles in 1984 (I saw Jerry Brown chapter one in the late 70's!!!). I got out of CA last year- I refuse to pay for unions, special intrest groups and crooked elected people in office! I left (like others have) becuase the state sucks (from spending/taxing/ to how the elected officals work-I gave UP!). I looked at the web I found Texas to be fast growing-low tax, and NO STATE INCOME TAX! My DMV cost is 200.00 for TWO BIG GAS GUZZLER 4X4 TRUCKS! In Cal for 2010 tags it was over 1,200! That's just for starters! What's your "sales tax" like around 10%-mine is 7.25% and sometimes I PAY NO SALES TAX if I pay "cash" to the person I am dealing with! That's money in my pocket! Yea keep knocking Texas, I am still paying about 2.50 per gallon for gas-what about you-how much of that is tax your paying?? You sit and pay 3.00 per gallon in gas; so much from those "green friendly" cars with HIGH INSURANCE! Again, money in MY POCKET WITH EVERY FILL UP! YEA,SAY GOOD BYE TAX BASE! Calif is in trouble becuase of all the same ol failed "progressive agendas" that have brought the most populated state in the USA to it's knees fiscally. Now you wanna push this BUNK "green friendly stuff" and your political agendas on the rest of the USA-LOL-fine good luck! Calif gonna possibly legalize marijuana this coming electing which is in violation of Fed law. Oakland just liad off 80 cops, after recent riots, and NOW looking at making large "pot farms" legal in the city-wow! Poeple take extra days off due to the broke state goverment, pass school bond after school bond, yet it never is enough-what happen to the "lottery?"! The Voters keep putting up with the crappy state and local goverment BS- pushed by groups with "agendas" like this artical is pushing! Calif stands to kick out 40,000 convicts out of prison becuase of cut backs and your refusal to do what is needed to REFORM YOUR STATE CORRECTIONS DEPARTMENT! You HAVE SAT and watched Palo Alto, Maywood, Bell, San Carlos Police departments close their doors due to being "broke" (with 11 more to follow by Dec 2010!)-yea, your "green jobs" nonsense is top of the list alright! "Oboma-Hope and Change" is really working out in CALIF! This artical is a total smoke and mirrors for the voters-confuse and cloud the issues so Boxer has a chance on winning! Even the LA TIMES WON'T SUPPORT HER! You don;t even wanna know what my property Tax is in Texas! Boxer would REPEAL "PROP 13" IF SHE COULD! In Calif my property tax was over 6,700! In Texas it's just over 2,000-for a much nicer and larger home! Texas has a 11 Billion surplus- Calif should be taking NOTES ON THIS! YOU BLAME BUSH for the high COST OF LIVING in Calif!! You blame Bush for High DMV, the spending habits of PEOPLE California-man you gotta be smoking dope if you belive that nonsense! You just watch what will now happen to the price of eggs in Calif after Aronld signed the "Chicken Bill of Rights" last month- is that Bushs fualt??! Calif has already drove out many Dairy farmers due to the "panic over cow gas and CO2 gas"-that's really amusing! Is that Bushs fualt?? I guess the "budget mess" was to big for Calif voters and the elected idiots in Sac to handle so they worried more about "chicken cages"-now you are worried about "coal" but build coal plants in Arizona and bring in the power to Calif via lines! Sue pay more-why not! My "co-op" for my Texas electric (powered by coal!) company billed me 250.00 last month (30 days)- I paid about 9 cents per killow watt hour-yours was??? When I was in Calif I could bet it would be 800.00 per month this time of year for 30 days! The highest I have EVER paid in Texas is 15 cents per killow watt hour! People in LA using So Cal Edison are paying 28 cents per KWH! LOL, yea keep telling yourselves it's all "Bushs fualt" and the "evil" oil companies are killing jobs! Your alot like a drug addict the first step to "recovery" is admitting you have a problem-I guess people in Calif have not sunk low enough yet! You will-you will at the rate your going. Oboma is NOT COMING TO YOUR AID-LOOK AT ALL THE SIMULUS MONEY you DID NOT GET! Texas got the largest amount of money to date for a Highway outside Dallas!

I live in the coal mining Appalachian area of Ohio now, but have family and college connections to California. The article paints Murray (Ohio coal CEO)accurately. Bob has it right on Texas and Enron and the shutting off of the electricity to California, now almost 10 years ago. John should stop denying climate change. Moreover, the environmental degradation resulting from our fossil fuel obsession is dreadful: in Canada (tar sands oil extraction); WV and KY (mountain top removal coal mining; fracking (natural gas extraction resulting in polluted ground water that may burst into flame.) If we don't want an atmosphere like Venus (500 degrees), we'd better put our engineers and scientists and business people to work on wind, solar and geo-thermal alternative energies. I'm too old to suffer what my grandchildren WILL SUFFER if thinking like John's wins out. Alas, Boxer's "solution" (current cap and trade proposal) IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH.
John IN TEXAS's picture
The way I see it-if you don't want the power from Coal burning electic power plants-TURN OFF THE A/C out west! Teach us a lesson! Otherwise be prepared to pay whatever the price on the going market will sustain. Right now out in West Texas they are building massive wind farms to harvest power-the power grid in Texas is set up so power goes out-not in! This is all done to sell power to Calif's 35 million power using customers! Arizona, Nevada, and others are now doing the same-all building to sell California power-THAT'S BECUASE CALIF IS NOT BUILDING ANY PLANTS-ELECTRIC POWER HAS TO COME FROM SOME PLACE; MIGHT AS WELL BE OTHER STATES WITH LESS RESTRICTIONS! EVERY DAY COMMUTTERS DRIVE TO WORK IN LA AND OTHER CITIES-THEY NEED GAS FOR THOSE CARS-IT HAS TO COME FROM SOME PLACE BECUASE CALIF WON'T ALLOW "OFF SHORE DRILLING"-so people in calif can pay whatever the markets will allow-capitalism at it's best! You talk about "gree jobs"! When I left Los Angeles, we had just finished building many new schools using public bonds (2004 AND 2007) none of these schools had any type of "solar" grids-yet you hype Calif and a leader in "eco-friendly" buildings. When I looked in Texas around Dallas and Austin for a new home- I saw HIGH SCHOOLS with SOLAR GRIDS ON THEM and these schools made anything in LA looks shabby-they were clearly all new schools! The realtors all joked with me and said, "That's California gas and electic tax money hard at work in our state building schools and roads". NO KIDDING! Lobbies for both right and left are like fleas on a dog-they are everywhere! What matter is results-Boxer has not gotten any in all her years in office! Less goverment means better business-it's that simple! I love this part "that may burst into flame" kinda like Arizona's law "may lead to racial profiling" and so on-all this needless "fear mongering". The "tree huggers" are great at this and when they don't get what they want they burn us buildings and SUV's like "ELF" has done in California! I no longer feel sorry for people in Calif-LET THEM PAY I SAY! As I said, Los Angeles gets 21% of THE CITIES (DWP) power from Arizona, which has coal fuel plants IN ARIZONA (THIS CAME OUT IN THE IMMIGRATION DEBATE RECENTLY)-yet I don't see anyone bring this little item up in this artical as you all fuss over "coal"-if your so worried about the "enviorment" cut the power lines from these coal burning plants-"walk your talk". Otherwise stop complaining.

P.S, to the below comments. Today, I just put in a "rain water caputer pond" it took them 5 days to dig it with a D8 Cat and earth mover. Now I can harvest all my rain water run off! To do this type of building in LA County and Calif it would have cost me alot more due to the fact I needed a "grading permit" to dig the hole. I needed approval from the Acton (CA) community standards board-which CONTROLS building projects where I once lived. Then I would need to put up a "fence" to keep people out and signs up warning them they could "die" if they swim in the pond-geezzz! Yea, California-I was happy to leave! I would ALSO have had to make sure all the contractors had "work comp" for thier workers and had the permits to use the heavy equipment. NONE OF THIS "RED TAPE" EXISITS IN TEXAS! We have "red tape" but it's not anything like calif! You tell me Calif has "green jobs" and "is eco-friendly" what a lie! I been down these roads in the past-many of you are clueless how bad things are in Calif and how badly people like Boxer are hurting the state! Boxer is part of the problem-big goverment status quo!

Just one of the more amusing articals on "global warming" !!!! do you really think we are this ignorant??? http://www.prisonplanet.com/study-global-warming-will-increase-illegal-i... this is stupied!

So nice to hear that such coal mining industry still has interest to donate something. As for this Christmas, let's forget about this "global warming" thing first and focus our energies on something else like this coal miners did. Something like holiday greeting cards campaign to raise funds for some charities isn't a bad idea. what do you think?
