Big Spenders: Interest groups for teachers and oil industry spend millions to lobby state legislators

Businesses and special interests spent more than $135 million to lobby state lawmakers during the legislative session, according to data through September 2009. The top spenders: 

1. California Teachers Association

$4,913,399.57

2. California State Council of Service Employees

$4,452,016.43

3. Western States Petroleum Association

$4,372,378.16

4. California Chamber of Commerce

$2,637,599.48

5. Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association

$2,144,804.50
