Since 1855, there have been more than 70 earthquakes in or near California over 6.0 on the Richter scale, some of them very near University of California and California State University campuses. This map shows the locations of those earthquakes (represented by red circles) and the locations of the various campuses. UC and CSU campuses, represented by blue and purple markers, appear the year the campus was founded.
Use the controls in the top left corner of the graphic to show or hide the UC and CSU campuses or restart the graphic at any time. Move your cursor over the blue and purple dots to view the name of the campus.

Interesting though that there have been no major Earthquakes in California state for the last 10 years or so. There are lots of minor tremors but it seems like the next 'big one' is biding its time. Reading other articles on California Watch it seems that unless UC and CSU take urgent action the disaster could have tragic consequences. -- plr articles

The scenes from the movie “2012″ showing California lopping up on end, like a book, intact in just one or two pieces and sliding headlong into the ocean, apparently sending all 40 million residents “rolling” into the sea along with it, are hideous–pure Hollywood obviously–but enough to scare some.

Thanks for creating this interactive map. Pretty cool to see the chain of earthquakes that have bombarded California my home state.
