Interactive Map: A history of earthquakes in California

Since 1855, there have been more than 70 earthquakes in or near California over 6.0 on the Richter scale, some of them very near University of California and California State University campuses. This map shows the locations of those earthquakes (represented by red circles) and the locations of the various campuses. UC and CSU campuses, represented by blue and purple markers, appear the year the campus was founded.

Use the controls in the top left corner of the graphic to show or hide the UC and CSU campuses or restart the graphic at any time. Move your cursor over the blue and purple dots to view the name of the campus.

I have been always interested in geology. I find it very exciting. My occupation has nothing to do with this fascinating and intriguing science, unfortunately, but I have always experienced a kind of awe in the face of natural disasters. Only imagine, your life totally depends on a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust. All in all, I thank you for broadening my outlook considerably and substantively:-) That is worth while doing... And, in my turn, I want to share the video with you http://www.videorolls.com/watch/Earthquake-Destruction I am shocked...

Your blog is very informative about research. The amount of solar energy reaching the surface of the planet is so vast that in one year it is about twice as much as will ever be obtained from all of the Earth's non-renewable resources of coal, oil, natural gas, and mined uranium combined. This is an affecting point of view on this topic.I am glad to catch idea from your article. I am so thankful that you shared this map to us. I hope that there would be more details about the earthquake. But this is a great help already.
Florence Horner's picture
Earthquakes are a problem that concerns most of the United States, whether people know it or not. But the details differ, and no reasonable book can address the distinctive needs of Hawaii, Alaska, the Pacific states, the Midwest and the Atlantic states. The greatest challenge is sprawling California, whose boundaries encompass more than 30 million people and several different geologic regimes. The deadly subduction zone of the northwest, shared with Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, is capable of far larger shocks than anywhere else in the state. The parallel fault strands of the San Francisco Bay area threaten this important region where cities have spread because of great nature's gifts but heedless of the hazard, despite the example of 1906. Just inland and down the Coast Range are menacing thrust faults whose cumulative effects have created the area's oil-producing formations. And Southern California, whose fault map resembles the palm of a hand, nervously awaits earthquakes of all sizes both distant and unexpectedly underfoot.

Interesting though that there have been no major Earthquakes in California state for the last 10 years or so. There are lots of minor tremors but it seems like the next 'big one' is biding its time. Reading other articles on California Watch it seems that unless UC and CSU take urgent action the disaster could have tragic consequences. -- plr articles

It is still a debatable subject whether such calamities will be avoidable or curved uder control but one thing which is in our hand is we can build special building that can resist the shock wave. As much as people like to hype the fact there are so many earthquakes in California, the fact is there are other states in the US that have earthquakes as well. They may not have been to the magnitude of several in the Bay Area, but there are numerous fault lines across many states that could go at any time that most don't realize. Range Cookers
