California Department of Education
Do you need to contact a state education official but don’t know how? The California Department of Education website has telephone numbers, organization lists and e-mails to help you get in touch. The site also has several searchable databases and loads of statistics that can be used to track academic progress and compare funding levels or student performance among individual schools, districts and counties.
 
Legislative Analyst’s Office
The California Legislative Analyst's Office provides fiscal and policy reports on major educational bills, propositions and budget expenditures.
 
Legislative committees on education
Before any education proposals become law in California, it usually will be debated and discussed by members of the State Assembly’s Committee on Education, the Senate’s Committee on Education and the Senate Subcommittee on Educational Governance and Accountability. Information is also available on the history of any educational bill.
 
Commission on Teacher Credentialing
For lots of useful information on the process of becoming and remaining a teacher in California, try the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The commission is also the source on teacher discipline data, as well as statistics on the number of credentialed and unlicensed teachers across counties, districts and schools. To find credentials on individual teachers, use this search function.
 
Newspaper education tools
Several newspapers have built strong education tools and pages on their websites – most notably the Los Angeles Times, which provides links to test scores and other information statewide. The San Francisco ChronicleOakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury News and Sacramento Bee also have helpful education pages.
