Reporting tips

Reporting on politics sometimes feels like being back in junior high. There are factions, cliques, cool kids, losers. There's pettiness, backstabbing and more gossip than you will ever know what to do with. It’s easy to get distracted. The trick is keeping your eye on the ball.

We elect public officials because we trust them to do the right thing. At a basic level, that means making decisions in the best interests of their constituents — not themselves or their friends, family and special-interest groups. Any potential breach of that trust deserves to be exposed, so voters have enough information to decide whether their elected officials are fit to hold office. That accountability is what investigating politics is all about.

And when in doubt, follow the money. It worked for Woodward and Bernstein.
