Bio

Mandy Hofmockel is a senior majoring in media studies and political science at Penn State University. She was a Dow Jones News Fund multimedia intern this past summer working for the Center for Investigative Reporting and California Watch. She has worked as a reporter, copy editor and web editor for her college newspaper for the past three years. She also spent a summer reporting for her local paper. Mandy is working as a web production intern, and will help create multimedia content for California Watch and the Center for Investigative Reporting.

My priorities

I've got one year to go at Penn State University. I'm spending a lot of time working on our school news website. I'm doing a little bit of multimedia work for California Watch on the side.

As Americans consume more and more products from China and other countries with weaker consumer safety regulations, the case of Rainbow Apparel shows how persistent the problem of lead contamination can be and how, in turn, consumers may never know if their trinkets are safe.
VIDEO: First, California Watch screens items for lead
California Watch reporters bought 30 items at Rainbow Apparel stores in the Bay Area. The Oakland-based Center for Environmental Health performed initial screens for lead. The group regularly performs lead screenings for the state attorney general.

Items that exhibited high lead levels during an initial screening at the Center for Environmental Health were sent to Forensic Analytical Laboratory in Hayward for testing. All six items that screened high in the first round, tested high for lead at the lab.
